 Yes, that's exactly the reaction I get when people on online Sachin fan sites get to know about my gender. Somehow, according to general perception, boys love cricket , while girls , just love the cricketers ! But then these girls watch the Dhonis , Pathans , Zaheers etc...hardly any of them watch Sachin. and this is what makes people gape at me in amazement and disbelief. ‘coz I am an unabashed Sachin follower , using it as loosely as possible ! Sachin my god , Sachin my idol , the answer to literally every question of my life...and somehow boys find this weird. The fact is they just don't expect a girl to know anything about cricket .and when I talk of sachin's silken straight drives , and glorious cover drives, the smooth sweeps and the breathtaking upper cut (I can go on and on about the last one , but to stick to the point , I'd better not!! ) anyways , so the super boys cant understand how I can possibly understand it all. For girls never bother about all such ‘technical' stuff...as long as India is winning , sixes are being hit , wickets are being taken and a handsome cricketer is on display , that's all there is to cricket . they hardly realize , that cricket is not just in attack , cricket is beautiful in defense too ; that cricket is not just about playing, its about leaving too . and honestly , as much as I hate to admit it , I guess its true to a large extent , if my experience is anything to go by . so, as I was saying , boys don't understand how I can know the nuances of the game...after all , I am a girl ! but then again , being brutally honest , I confess i don't understand all the nuances...just some .but u know what ,I learnt an amusing fact from my experience of a good 15 years of watching cricket with guys ( yes thanks to my brothers , I have been a follower since I was 4 !) and the fact is , even THEY don't understand it all !! watching cricket , especially Sachin is indeed a divine experience , but watching with guys makes it so much more fun...its indeed a pleasure when your companions actually know when to applaud and when to commiserate ;when they know when to shout and when to stay mum ! I am sure , my few fellow girls who watch real cricket know what I am talking about . if only more people could know the sheer joy of watching Sachin play ! just watching him at the crease makes my day !! the steely determination in his eyes when the bowler approaches, the perfect coordination with which he hits the ball , the miraculous balance in the follower through, the impeccable running between the wickets... sheer genius ! but even if somebody cannot notice any of this , just watching him for the joy that comes on his face when something goes according to plan , the mischief when he tries something cheeky , the disappointment when he misjudges the line of the ball ( which , by the way , hardly happens ) ... the complete serenity and calmness of his face , is worthwhile . as anon says in sachinism , no doubt a day will come when some young turk or turks will break the records sach made. But will they be broken in the same manner they were created ? would there be that element of integrity and love for the game? Would those innings have the ‘feel good factor ‘ sachin's innings had ? would they change somebody's day ? and so much more ...I seriously doubt it. And herein lies sachin's biggest contribution towards india . the records and pride may be replaced one day .what will never leave is the way Sachin influenced our teen lives... how everything to do with him became our life. How he taught us so many valuable lessons about life without ever being preachy. How he did everything by example. In short , how he unknowingly created a new effortless religion , we like to call ‘sachinism'. The thought of his retiring one day does feel like the end of our lives in a way , but till he is there , let us celebrate his each innings , his each shot , his each day in india colours ... let us celebrate his mere presence. So yes , I do go to any lengths to catch a glimpse of him ,coz that makes me feel blessed to be born in this era. I manipulate everything around so that I can watch him play .i am jubilant when he scores and depressed when he doesn't , not because he couldn't , but because I couldn't watch him for a longer period of time. I wait for 2011 just because he says he wants to win the world cup, and his dream is my dream . and everytime I watch him , I forget about every problem of mine and feel such enormous power and hope within me , that nothing seems impossible . and yes , I am a girl and I love cricket !!! |

Hi Madhyama, Your article is such an eye opener for all those semi-chauvanists like me who not only think, rather believes that Girls do not understand a **** about Cricket ... I used to think all the Girls care about when watching or pretending to watch Cricket; is just how glamourous some of the Cricketers look. I would come up with a brief compilation of examples to support my attitude. For the sake of simplicity I would contain my field of vision within the range of Indian Cricketers & the Indian 'Cricket watching' girls only. When Sachin was simply sensational during 96 world cup, Anil Kumble was foxing batsmen with unseen dare, all the Girls cared about was how cute Ajay Jadeja looked ... Then Ganguly & Dravid stormed into the scene. To be honest, before 99 atleast, Rahul Dravid had simply nothing in his CV to boast about, but you know what; even when Sachin was performing in God-like manner, all the Girls cared about was how handsome Rahul Dravid was. Then came the dashing Yuvraj (in the ODIs only). Saurav Ganguly was simply terrorizing the bowlers in the ODIs with awesome audacity, VVS Laxman with Rahul Dravid played the greatest ever Test Innings in the greatest ever Test match; Girls said how glamourous did Rahul Dravid look & a nice comparison started whether he looks more handsome or the young Yuvraj. Then came the hugely talented Irfan Pathan & long-haired Dhoni, so Dravid got replaced by these two. Lastly Sreesanth came in dancing & finally planned to join some Films before one tight slap brought him back to the game. And make no mistake, these are the Guys whom the Girls always loved to watch. Even when guys like Sachin, Saurav, Rahul, Laxman, Kumble, Sehwag, Zaheer, Gambhir regularly performed handsomely, Girls did not find any interest. Obviously the picture becomes clear, that Girls in general do not understand Cricket, they just look for the hot guys in some Uniform or Jerseys. However, my generalization was universally true before recently I met a few Girls, who could actually comprehend the Game truly & duly respect the masters of the Game. The fact that, the Girl stated the fact that she finds Lara's batting even more attractive than Sachin's, caught my imagination. I realized that Girl has an opinion over the game & that is simply not based upon any guy's hotness. I understood there is a minor community of Girls who actually understand the Game. Although very few are there, but yes they are there. Then I joined this group and found you describing the very scenario, which I felt, when a few Girls actually told me they are fan of Sachin, and it was not because of his boyish charm, neither for his Iconic conduct off the field; it is rather for Sachin's amazing quality of playing Cricket. It is said that better late than never. I won't be a male chauvanist any more & accept that a 'few' Girls understand Cricket & I respect them. Regards,

Very well written Madhyama, Even when you joined the site, I had asked you in a surprise how a girl can be so much ardent fan of Sachin and that too not only for his looks, but for what he actually is in 'Cricketing' terms. I remember when i went to MTV's office, i was asked abt female members specifically .............. all i could say was that some of the biggest fans are females . and off course had a few articles written by madhyama and shipra to support the case. |
