The Elephant Strikes Back: Tendulkar Pulls Further Away From the Crowd

3rd December, 2006 Ricky Ponting scores his 33rd Test match century against England at Adelaide, during the 2nd Test match in the Ashes series.

With this, the Australian is not just two behind Sachin Tendulkar, and surely, he is going to surpass Tendulkar’s tally of 35 even before the end of this series.

27th January, 2008 Ricky Ponting finally gets to his 34th Test century. Sachin Tendulkar is now on 39. This isn’t going to be as easy as it seems!

Present Day Sachin Tendulkar scores his 42nd Test match hundred, his 85th international century, his 18th score of over a hundred and fifty, his third in his last four matches, and the numbers just keep on pouring. Tendulkar yet again stretches the gap to five Test match hundreds and the man Sanjay Manjrekar referred to as the “Elephant in the Room” keeps his steady pace.

He is still five centuries clear of Ponting, and over 1600 runs ahead. If recent form is any indication to go by, the odds are stacked in the favour of Tendulkar extending his lead.

In their last six Test matches or eleven innings, Tendulkar has scored 650 runs at an average of 72.22, while Ponting has been decidedly more mediocre with 483 at 43.9.

The Tendulkar graph is going just one way, and that is up, while Ponting is not having the best of patches. He is not in bad form, but just being inconsistent. Like Tendulkar he crossed fifty five times, but the glaring difference is in the ‘ducks’ column, 3 to Tendulkar’s nil.

His conversion rate is also hurting Ponting. Off his five fifties, three have been over 80, including a 99 in the match at Melbourne, where he came amazingly close to getting a hundred in each inning for a fourth time! Scary.

That match, though, has been his best outing in terms of runs scored during this period.

Tendulkar on the other hand has scored hundreds against Australia, England and New Zealand during this period with two further fifties against Australia. In fact in the last 14 months Tendulkar has had just one blip, the tour of Sri Lanka where he scored a paltry 95 in six innings at 15.83.

He has been in imperious form against Australia, both home and away, and England and has now begun in grand style against New Zealand.

While Tendulkar is going to get two more Test caps in this series, Ponting has only one more inning to look forward to in the current series against South Africa, which gives the Little Master a chance to further stretch this gap.

The race is very much in its final few stages here, with both men in their mid thirties, it is difficult to see Tendulkar go beyond 2011 and Ponting beyond 2012-13.

The onus is on Tendulkar to make it as difficult for the Tasmanian as possible to get hold of one of the most prestigious records in the game.

It's an insult to Sachin if we compare him with CRAP Ponting....

and even more if we listens what Sanju Manju is speaking...... Tongue out

Don't think Ponting can break the record of Sachin. Please don't get me wrong, but I don't see a chance.

Let me make it clear. More than often you have seen, great innings are always made as a part of some good partnerships. However, in earlier stages Sachin scored a few hundreds without caring much about incompetencies of fellow players, but that is not the case in Australia.

Ponting scored the bulk of his runs when the big Matthew Hayden & resolute Justin Langer was reigning supreme at their Opening & most often produced not only big partnerships, but also demoralized the hapless bowlers by simultaneous Attack & Defense. Then after they are out, Ponting used to come and make a mincemeat of the tiring attack. Ponting could afford to play freely majorly due to having an assurance that, either Hayden, Langer, Steve Waugh, Martyn, even Hussey can give him company & he need not worry about Runs scored or wickets falling. Even in worst case, if none of the mentioned players click, in comes Adam Gilchrist, undoubtedly one of the most devastating player in the modern cricket & shoots the Run Rate up to 4 & above. Hell, even Warne & Gillespie could bat out the whole day.

But, now the situation is not the same. Hayden, Langer, Steve Waugh, Martyn, Warne, Gillespie, Gilchrist has all retired. The team is not the same anymore. Hussey is consistent, but he is going to finish very soon. Clarke is a completely overhyped player. So, now Ponting is more or less out of company.

You just check how many centuries did Ponting score after their famous Openers retired. Ponting always thrived upon their Openers' conquests. He is a good player, but he is never an all-condition player. Good partnerships nourished his scoring.

Since that golden generation is no more, I don't see Ponting scoring much these days. In fact that Carbon-fibre illegal bat is banned which he used to hit those big sixes effortlessly even with mistimed slog shots.

All in while, the story for Sachin was not the same. He scored even before Dravid, Laxman, Ganguly was there, he scored with them with equal ease. He scored with Sehwag, Gambhir, Yuvraj, Dhoni. He scored with Azhar, Jadeja, Vengsarkar, Sidhu, Shastri. He scored in the worst of the Spinning tracks, he scored in the fastest & the bounciest tracks.

He both assumed the role of One-Man-Army & also playing second fiddle to the brilliant Laxman in Australia.

That concludes our point. Ponting has never been this much versatile, hence I don't see him Catching up with the God of Cricket in Tests (forget ODIs). The only place I see Ponting surpassing Sachin is in International Twenty20s, since Sachin has decided to stay out of it.

So, I would suggest all my fellow believers in Sachinism, just don't be anxious (even if your heart cries in anguish), no one can touch Sachin records under any circumstances.

the gap is reduced to 4 now.... bt i m sure Master will widen this gap n make it impossible for punter to reach the summit....

the only thing tat produces doubt in our minds is the number of tests India is going to play in nxt 2-3 years is far less than wat Aus will play.... bt still i firmly believe tat Sachin will always lead the battle....

one day when sachin will say good bye to cricket(I wish that day should not come)he will be the all possible record holder in his field..highest run, most century(both in test & ODI),most matches and above will  the most successful player that  world cricket has ever produceed

hence it's unjustice to compare This little master with any other player..even not with ponting..his attitude.commitment to country..is just unparellel...ponting will never catch up with sachin in any form of the game.he is now 36..still is in supreme form.the passion hasn't,the thrist just got bigger.he will end his glorious carrer in a position where the next genaration cricketer will never imagine to rich...they will probably think Sachin Ramesh tendulkar is a gorgeous cricket  monster from a superb fairy-tale written by cricket god itself

It's my intuition that Sachin will end up scoring more hundreds than any other batsman in the world.  However, it is not going to be a cake walk for Sachin when it comes to beating Ponting in this century-race; simply because Sachin is the most 'analyzed' batsman of all time, analyzed by the bowlers all over the world. This is the biggest difference between the two batsmen and Sachin has to keep ahead of him despite this challenge. Of course he has kept himself ahead all the time, and let's pray that he will...

ponting is a really good batsman....and he is surely providing some competition to Sachin....but...Sachin is sachin yaar! ;) ...though we shouldnt be worrying about records...ponting wont break it....the record might be broken some day...but as Sachin said....."This is India's record and I would like it to stay with India" ...so if someone does break it..it has to be an Indian....!!

ponting will never get it , it will be divine injustice if he did , and even the god cant betray our cricket god ....and in case he does , iwill quote anon from sachinism article , " will the records be broken in the way they were made ????" ssachin shall stay as unique as ever , irrespective of what ponting might acheive.pontingism is impossible , while sachinism is omnipresent , lives and stays each in all our lives , changing all our lives!!!
