JUST ANOTHER REPUBLIC DAY ??---- BY Madhyama

Here we go again. Another January 26th has arrived. A day when our Constitution was framed and implemented. A day when we started our journey as a Sovereign, Democratic, Secular, Republic. A day when we truly became free!!

But what does this day actually means for a common Indian? For those in schools its day when students have to perform the tedious March Past , stay hungry till 11 , listen to boring speeches and get tired . For those working in government sectors , it's a day (again) to listen to boring speeches , eat sweets , speak about false pride which they don't feel and make a bunch of false promises and pledges . And for those in corporate sectors, it's a simple holiday, nothing more than that.

Why is it that a day of such great significance is considered so by all of us, and yes, ‘all' is the word, for all of us are equally responsible for such a shameful phenomena. Why is it that we just sing some patriotic songs on 26th January and 15th August just for the heck of it without any feel and forget everything about patriotism the whole year round? Why is it that we expect foreigners to respect our country when we ourselves don't recognize and celebrate it?? Why is it that an achievement becomes so only when acknowledged by some external agency and not before it? Why is it that people say Sachin is great only when Bradman says Sachin is great? Why is it that a slum dog millionaire becomes a roaring success only after winning golden globe and not before? Are we afraid to voice our opinions? Are we unsure of ourselves? Or are we ashamed of our roots, our cultures and our history? What are we doing to our dear nation???

Isn't it time that we woke up to the realities of life? Isn't it time we actually started behaving as a leader rather than a sycophantic follower? Isn't it time we became conscious? We are supposed to be proud of nation, our history, our martyrs and our progress every single day of the year. But if not that, let's at least be proud and happy twice a year! Pride and happiness is not shown by shouting on top of our voice the praises of our country. It's by being aware. It's by being sensitive.

For as long as I can remember, our leaders have always been very sure and confident of themselves, whether it was a half naked Gandhiji speaking against the policies of the British or a very young Swami Viveka Nand at Chicago speaking on zero. And for long as I can remember, I have always witnessed Sachin playing fearlessly, looking in the eyes of the bowler, full of pride and love for his country. For as long as I can remember, I see sachin battling it our in the middle with every drop of his blood and sweat to make his country proud and yes, it is the whole country and not just the team. When sachin scores, it's the country's score, not just the teams, such is the impact of true patriotism, the impact of confidence, integrity, humbleness. Such is the impact of Sachin! Just have a look at Sachin singing the National Anthem or the recent video when Sachin broke down while meeting the families of slain NSG commandoes, and you would know just what I mean. Just how sachin is celebrating our country's freedom every single day of his year, every single day of his life!

So let's wake up now. Let's watch RDB one more time and adopt the things they say in the climax. Let's do something now. Let's make a significant positive difference in our country. Lets emulate sachin and make this 26th January and all other days that are to follow, different .As they say in a popular brand's tagline ‘Just do it!'

A very happy republic day to you all!!!!!

no vishal i dont think u got my point .... maybe i am not that good a writer to have explained the exact thing i wanted to convey . we are trying to say the same thing almost actually . i am not saying that you have to say deshbhakti slogans to prove your patriotism . infact i guesss i wrote this somewhere in the article too :Pride and happiness is not shown by shouting on top of our voice the praises of our country. It's by being aware. It's by being sensitive.

and about bradman , i cant tell you how many ppl  i have met and how many articles i have read in which it is mentioned that ppl acknowledged the greatness of sachin after bradman,s remark . forget bradman , even when lara praises sachin , the indian media , supposedly voice of india , goes in a frenzy and goes on to praise sachin as if without his comment the fact wouldnt exist . cant tell you in detail now , havent got time , but its a situation i have witnessed and many times .

even about slumdog , my point is , ppl in india are appreciating it  and giving it awesome reviews only after all these fab nominations , even though some equally awesome movies , arent given the same importance simply because they arent recognised by the international fraternity .

and about the common man , he cant straightaway clean the politics , its impossible , but at least he can keep the roads clean , he cant stop others corruption , but at least he can pay his taes in time without any cheating . u realise how much such small things make a differnece ? thats patriotism for me .

could have written more but havent got time at all now .

thanks for the reviews anyway !

Great stuff Madhi

i agree with vishal that sachin's greatness had nothing to do with bradman's comments and also abt slumdog .................but yeah if i watch RDB again then maybe we'll soon get a couple of national holidays ............there are many around who deserve to be slayed Tongue out

i just cant stop thinking about this.....i agree with parts of it..but not generalizing it..hate the Indians who take shit about India..it sucks! ...but mostly we all stand up yaar..its a very touchy issue...i had a talk with 2 of my friends the other day..about foreign culture and indian culture...we went on and on for 2-3 hours...it never ends.

i give the idea..but didnt have the balls to announce over the speaker lol..so told him to do it...it was awesome! ..all teachers were talking to us about it...

well maybe its different perspectives and all..cuz i living abroad..can proudly say that i am patriotic most of the times..and so are the others out here...we can literally be fighting to prove that India is a great nation etc..

yes in india its a lot about when students have to perform march pasts and all..but today..we all were at school...and i told one of my friends to wish all Indians over the speakers...which are announced through the whole school..we didnt have to do it..but we did! ..

and about the Sachin bradman part...i dont agree..its not true....sachin was great even when bradman hadnt said it...we just use that line to prove his greatness...

i am not sure but didnt slumdog millionare release a bit late in India? like a few days ago? and 2-3 weeks outside India...so ofcourse the golden globes award is going to hype up the movie..

about being proud of our nation...well...there are a lot of problems in our nation..pura saal mera bharath mahan gata raha tho tariki kahan se hoaga? woh tho andhon ke desh kehlaya jayaga...ofcourse i am very proud about a lot of things..but at the same time i cant keep on saying that all year....when you are sitting among indians..you should be discussing how to take nation forward...not wut happened before..

ofcourse when some foreigner says anything about our nation we all stand up as one and reply to them.....

i am not that big a fan of Gandhiji..ofcourse i have all the respect for him...but ...yea...

wut should someone do? i know everyone says this..and there is also a really good reply for it...but wut can a normal guy living in delhi do? ...if there is corruption it has to be removed from the top...anyways thats a separate issue all together..as far as i know i am very patriotic throughout the year...i live outside India...and many indians do start speaking english when living abroad...but i havent left my mother tongue...and many of us havent!!! not that thats the most patriotic thing..but yeah.....there are various other examples i could give...but ill stop for now...
